On the 24th October, Kate and Tamsin were kindly invited to take part in the Creative Future's event at the WASPS Artists Studios - a great afternoon focused on talking to young people aged 13-25 who were considering a career in the creative arts.
We were kindly invited by the artists at the WASPS studios across
the road from us to join them and other representatives from the creative
industry in an
afternoon event focused on encouraging young people to get
involved in a creative future.
This was a great event focused on engaging young people aged from
13 to 25, and talking to them about their possible career routes into a
creative job. There were lots of different companies and different creative
pursuits represented, from us - theatrical designers, to independent artists,
Voice Of My Own filmmakers and representatives from Heriot Watt University and
the Borders Arts Festival.
We were incredibly impressed by the enthusiasm of the young people
who attended and also by how many of them had heard of our company through our
work experience programmes with the local schools, or from performing in shows
which featured our sets! We came away with a notebook full of enquiries about
work experience placements with us which was great as we love having people
come and join us here at the Studio, but also because getting as much
experience as possible is incredibly important if you want to pursue a creative
career or get a spot at art college!
The WASPS Studios themselves are also an incredibly inspiring
place to visit. Many Borders based artists have their own studios within the
building which gives them a space to allow them to focus on their work as well
as be able to display finished pieces that are up for sale. It's a very light,
peaceful enviroment and, as I had not had a chance to visit it before, I found
it really interesting to be able to wander around and see artists 'at work'.
It's a really friendly, comfortable enviroment and was perfect for hosting this
event.
Overall the Creative Futures event was a great success, it was
well attended by lots of different people who all shared a passion for working
in the creative arts and it was lovely to meet other artists who are based in
the Borders and hearing about their work. We're looking forward to attending
the next one already!
Don't forget to visit our brand new website and let us know what you think!
